Roundabout Theatre Company unites three indispensable members of the SDA community on Broadway this January: newly appointed to the SDA Board of Councilors member Blair Underwood, McKinley Belcher III MFA ’10, and Nnamdi Asomugha — who was last year’s graduate commencement speaker. The trio star in A Soldier’s Play in a limited engagement at the American Airlines Theatre. The show premieres on Jan. 21 and runs through March 15.
A Soldier’s Play tracks the 1944 murder of a black sergeant in Louisiana, and an investigator’s search for the culprit despite the agenda of army leadership. This run will be the show’s Broadway debut; following its run off-Broadway in 1981, playwright Charles Fuller won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, and it ran off-Broadway once more in 2005. Asomugha reprises Denzel Washington’s role, Pfc. Melvin Peterson, while Underwood plays Capt. Richard Davenport (played by Taye Diggs in 2005) and Belcher steps into Samuel L. Jackson’s role as Pvt. Louis Henderson. Tony winner Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun) directs this impressive cast of 17 for its two-month engagement.
