USC School of Dramatic Arts (SDA) Professor of Theatre Practice Stephanie Shroyer was honored at USC’s annual Academic Honors Convocation in April, receiving the USC Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching. The USC Associates Awards are the highest honors the university faculty bestows upon its members for distinguished intellectual and artistic achievements and for outstanding teaching, both in and out of the classroom. The Excellence in Teaching award specifically recognizes faculty who transform students’ understanding of themselves, their field of study, or the world, and who advance students’ professional growth and leadership skills.

Shroyer has been a cornerstone of SDA for decades, teaching across the school’s undergraduate and graduate degree programs and directing dozens of productions at USC. She has also served the school in numerous administrative roles, including associate dean, director of BFA programs, and artistic director.

Her impact extends well beyond the walls of USC. A Los Angeles-based director, choreographer and actor, Shroyer has worked at some of the region’s and nation’s most prestigious institutions, from the American Conservatory Theatre and the Denver Center to the Pasadena Playhouse and The Getty Villa. She is a founding company member of Pacific Resident Theatre and was the founding co-artistic director of the 24th Street Theatre, a professional theatre dedicated to bringing arts and arts education to South Central Los Angeles.

USC President Beong-Soo Kim presided over this year’s ceremony, celebrating faculty whose work reflects the university’s highest aspirations.

“What we recognize tonight represents the highest aspirations of our academic community,” said President Kim, “and that, in a word, is excellence.”
