In a new series, we explore some of the USC School of Dramatic Arts’ most helpful resources, introduced by the staff and faculty who manage them. In this installment, we talk with Academic Advisor Aspen Cole about everything the advising office has to offer.
Tell us about yourself and your role in Academic Advising.
Aspen Cole: My name is Aspen Cole and I serve as the Academic Advisor for BA and BFA students in SDA. My job is to help Theatre majors with course planning throughout their four years and provide students access to resources across campus to help them thrive academically, socially and emotionally. In my time outside of advising, I enjoy dancing with the Leigh Purtill Ballet Company, going to aerial silks classes, watching movies and going to concerts.
Why is Academic Advising a valuable resource that SDA students should know about?
Academic Advising is not just limited to helping students plan their classes each semester. We are here to lend a listening ear to any challenges a student may face during their time at USC and can help connect them with services and resources to ensure that they are being supported. In addition to degree and course planning for majors and minors, we also provide academic and time management coaching and career counseling.
What is the most underutilized resource at Academic Advising?
The SDA Weekly Newsletter provides weekly updates regarding advising, events around campus and different opportunities available to students.
Also, this is not an SDA Advisement resource, but a resource available to all USC Students: The Kortschak Center. The Kortschak Center pairs up students with an academic coach to get weekly coaching in time management and study skills. Theatre students are typically pretty busy with classwork, extracurriculars and rehearsal schedules, so meeting with an academic coach can help them ensure that they can fulfill all their obligations while also prioritizing mental health and physical well-being.
What is one thing about Academic Advising you wish all SDA students knew?
Checking and thoroughly reading your emails is an absolute necessity! If there’s anything you don’t know, you can always ask your academic advisor!
How can SDA students learn more if they’re curious about Academic Advising?
Sam and I are both accessible via email.
Students can book walk-ins with us. Walk-in advisement is available each day and appointments can be booked the day before the appointment.
