Associate Professor Takeshi Kata is headed to the Great White Way as scenic designer for Derren Brown’s Secret, opening on Broadway Sept. 15 at the Cort Theatre. The production —produced by J.J. Abrams, Thomas Kail and Jeffrey Seller — was previously seen off-Broadway and in the West End.
Secret, starring Brown, is a magic show combining elements of mind reading, illusion and showmanship to challenge and reshape the beliefs and stories that guide our lives.
Kata is a designer whose works can be seen across the country and in Japan. In New York, he has designed for Atlantic Theatre Company, Minetta Lane, Barrow Street Theatre, Playwright’s Horizons, Vineyard Theatre and Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre. Regionally, he has designed for American Players Theatre, Ford’s Theatre, Geffen Playhouse, Goodman, Hartford Stage, Mark Taper Forum, Old Globe, Steppenwolf and Yale Rep. He is an Obie Award winner and has been nominated for Drama Desk, Barrymore, Connecticut Critics Circle and Ovation awards.
