Associate Professor of Scenic Design and Head of Design Takeshi Kata received a 2022 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Scenic Design for a Play, announced on May 16. His nomination is for his scenic design of the recent Broadway production of Clyde’s, which performed at the Helen Hayes Theater.
Lynn Nottage’s Clyde’s is a funny, moving and urgent play that follows a formerly incarcerated kitchen staff of a truck stop sandwich shop, who find purpose and permission to dream by their shared quest to create the perfect sandwich.
Winners of the Drama Desk Awards will be announced the week of June 6.
Takeshi Kata is a theatrical set designer based in Los Angeles. He has designed over 200 theatrical productions — including plays, musicals, opera and dance. Recent Projects include Derren Brown: Secret (Broadway), Billy Budd (Central City Opera), Bug (Steppenwolf), Angels in America (Berkeley Rep), Office Hour (Public Theatre), Man From Nebraska (Second Stage), Cambodian Rock Band, Until the Flood and Quixote Nuevo in many theatres across the U.S. Kata has won an Jeff Award, an Obie award and has been nominated for Drama Desk, Ovation, San Francisco Critics Circle, TBA and Barrymore awards.
