Alumnus LeVar Burton named 2022 Rose Parade Grand Marshal

School of Dramatic Arts alumnus LeVar Burton was named the grand marshal for the 2022 Tournament of Roses Parade, a New Year celebration that has taken place for more than 130 years.

“The Tournament of Roses Parade and the Rose Bowl Game to follow has been a part of our family for years and years. … [Steph and I] are over the moon and beyond thrilled to be part of this amazing event,” Burton said during the televised announcement on Tuesday.

Known for his television roles as Kunta Kinte on Roots and Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Burton is also notable for as the longtime host and executive producer of the PBS series Reading Rainbow.

“An actor, director, educator and lifelong children’s literacy advocate, [LeVar Burton] exemplifies this year’s theme – Dream. Believe. Achieve,” shared Rose Parade officials on Twitter.
